Making the decision to seriously alter your diet is a big change and you have a right to ask all the questions you want. 1. Is eating low-carb bad for my kidneys?
When I first heard of a low-carb diet it was from my doctor. She said something about me being okay to do it because my kidneys were fine. Immediately that worried me. I was thinking; “What is eating low-carb going to do to my kidneys?” Well the worry here is for people with kidney disease because an overload of protein can cause pretty serious problems.
So, if you don’t have kidney problems, this is not a concern, which is what my doctor told me.
2. Does following a strict low-carb diet subject me to a greater risk of heart-attack?
Some people worry that the increase of saturated fats in meats may be a cause for concern when it comes to heart-attacks. There was little data to confirm or deny this until recent years.
The data now supports that there is no increased risk of heart-attacks on the diet. However, the research also shows that to reduce the risk of heart attack you should ingest a good portion of your fats from vegetables, nuts, healthy oils, and sources of omega-3.
3. Will I ever enjoy my favorite foods again if I follow a low-carb diet?
Eating low-carb really didn’t appeal to me at first because I figured after you take out potatoes, rice, bread, crackers, chocolate bars, and many other foods I love there’s nothing left to eat and enjoy. Oh how wrong I was. On a low-carb diet you can eat a huge selection of healthy, and tasty, foods.
A good general rule of thumb is that over time you can eat most foods that are not processed. However, in the first phase, you are restricted even on some non-processed foods.
The first phase of the Atkins low-carb diet has you eating meat, poultry, and fish. You also have a large selection of foundation vegetables and a good choice of hard cheeses.
You’ll be restricted from eating high-carb vegetables such as potatoes or corn. In the first phase you are also to stay away from fruits, nuts, and some dairy products, which you can gradually work back into your diet as you progress.
4. Will I gain weight back after my diet is over?
Obviously a big concern to starting any diet is the yo-yo effect. The concern is that once you’re done with the strict phases, will you go straight back to your old ways and gain it all back (and then some)? Of course no one can guarantee that the choices you make today will be the choices you make tomorrow and into the future. What we can tell you is that eating low-carb is a lifestyle choice, not a fad diet.

Eating low-carb is a lifestyle that is meant to be easy to maintain for a lifetime. Of course your body changes over time, as well as your tolerance for carbs, so you may need to readjust from time to time, but you’ll know your body so well by then that it will be easy.
